I guess this oil industry merger stuff is pretty widespread.

Nippon, Mitsubishi Aim To Compete With World Oil
Majors

TOKYO - Nippon Oil Co. and Mitsubishi Oil Co., whose planned merger
next April will create Japan's largest oil company with annual sales
of 3 trillion yen, are hoping to achieve competitive levels with
world oil majors in a tough business environment marked by
liberalization and deflation.

The move looks certain to touch off a wave of corporate matchmaking
in the petroleum industry. An age of megamergers is dawning in
Japan, one in which companies, no longer able to rely on
bureaucratic guidance, must devise their own strategies for
                     survival.
