[Fwd: Aargh! Anyone know how to repair Netscape Mail?]

Oops, meant to send this reply to the whole list yesterday instead of
just to Joe. Would have wasted a lot less of your time. Anyway, thanks

to all who responded.

By the way, I think the fact that I had "compressed" the mail was
responsible for some of the problem. I occasionally do this by mistake
when I'm trying to invoke another menu option. What does Netscape mail
compression actually do, and is there any way to undo it?

Actually, it was easier than that.

I simply renamed my inbox folder to inbox-crap. Then I restarted Netscape,
which created a new, empty Inbox folder for me. I could then open the
inbox-crap folder and it created a new index since it didn't find one and I
could read the old messages. Now I can sort through these things at my
leisure and get rid of the 99% I don't need to save, without starting from a
baseline of 5000 messages. A little faster to load, too.
