This is true... it's one of the more annoying things about the program.
However, assuming you don't keep unread mail around (I eventually read
everything), you can easily go back in afterwards and just use
Alt-Shift-C to mark everything a folder as read.
on the other hand, looking at my nsmail directory, I don't have any
summary files anymore... each message seems to be tagged with two
"X-mozilla-status" lines. Interesting... this is Nav 4.5 on Linux.
