Fair enough. For that matter, in early classical times Greek writing 
was one l-o-n-g stream of capitals, with no breaks for punctuation or 
even, if I remember correctly, the end of words. Obviously, written 
expression has gotten a bit more intelligible since then.

Still, ! ? and the like work on their own terms: they don't impart their 
meaning by simulating facial expressions, something wholly outside 
of written expression per se.
