Re: The Gaming Zone FAQ answer to supported OS's

I agree that the Internet Gaming Zone's attitude is at best crass, but really it's hard for me to get
particularly worked up about it.  There are plenty of on-line gameing resources on the net which are accessible by for example, my Netscape for Linux browser.  (Yahoo Games, Gamelan Software has a big Java video game collection, etc.)   I'm against Microsoft attempting to hijack the internet, but I don't think this particular case is worth worrying about too much.  Most of the free games (chess, go, etc.) can be played elsewhere.  I like on-line video games (I have even written one), and can find plenty of outlets for this without the Internet Gaming Zone.

Here is the text regarding OS support for the gaming zone.  This is just
the precursor of what Microsoft plans to do to the Internet.  Take it
away from us..

     SUMMARY

The Internet Gaming Zone, version 4.0, must be played on a computer
running Windows 95
or Windows NT 4.0 or later. The new Zone does not run on a Windows
3.x, Unix, or an
     Apple Macintosh computer.

     MORE INFORMATION

The decision to discontinue support for the Macintosh, Windows 3.x,
and Unix platforms
     was made for several reasons.

The new version of the Internet Gaming Zone uses a combination of
ActiveX and Java
technologies to provide the easiest-to-use interface for gaming on
the Internet. The
technologies used by the Zone have many Windows 95 and Windows NT
dependencies and, as
a result, will not run on other platforms.

Zone membership has grown from approximately 15,000 members in June
1996 to more than
200,000 by May 1997. Almost all of that growth has been on the
Microsoft Windows 95 and
     Windows NT platforms.

NT is secure.... as long as you don't remove the shrink wrap.
Want to speed up your NT box real cheap?  Replace NT with Linux...
