Concession Re: Java is an attempt to answer the wrong question.



Ok, I concede, one can design a Java-like language that is fairly
efficient without it being open source.  This can be shown trivially by
arguing that one could take a language, pass it through a garbling
program that makes it unreadable but has no effect on its efficiency,
and then send the garbled code to be compiled on each architecture.
I should have thought more before posting.
