As one of this list's part time Macintosh historians, I must state for
the record that volume names have been integrated into the Mac
architecture for 14 years. I can still recall the first time I stuck a
disc into a Mac floppy drive and saw it appear instantly on the desktop,
with a volume name =I could change simply by clicking on it and typing=!
My eyes nearly popped out.
I had a related Windows Moment the other day. I was looking over the
shoulders of two gents from a public agency, who were trying to package
some data on a floppy for me. All we needed to do was unpack an .exe
file, which I can't use on the Mac, into a .zip file, which I can. This
simple operation was accompanied by no small degree of grunting and
muttering on the part of the staffers, mainly because Windows Explorer
makes it so darned difficult to show the contents of two disks side by
side. When I wondered out loud at this deficiency, one of the staffers
remarked, "of course you can, you just need to start another session."
Another session? What is this, a psychiatric examination? In a way, yes...
BTW, I have no doubt that when I left this office, the two staffers
grumbled to each other about those bloody Mac users and their bloody
special requirements...
