States to tackle Microsoft
"States to tackle Microsoft?
Nearly a dozen states may be mulling
their own antitrust action against firm

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Taking litigation into their
own hands, several states are believed to be
preparing a self-styled antitrust lawsuit against
Microsoft Corp., with or without the Justice
Department.
A draft complaint circulating among 11 states
could be filed before the end of the month with the
same federal judge who handled the government's
case against the software titan last year, according to
The Wall Street Journal.
The Journal said about a dozen state attorneys
general have pooled their resources and are
cooperating with federal antitrust officials in mounting
a probe of the software maker's activities.
But the states are apparently apprehensive that
the Justice Department effort will either lose steam or
fail to make a significant dent in Microsoft's
perceived dominance of the desktop software
industry.
States involved in the effort include Ohio, New
York, Maryland, Massachusetts, California, Texas,
Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Other states' involvement
could not be confirmed.
