Likely as not, what is at work here is more a function of ignorance 
rather than an effort at deliberate deceit. A constant across the entire 
spectrum of retail salespeople seems to be that they are generally poorly 
trained and educated about the products they sell, but feel compelled to 
feign expertise anyway. It is truly frightening to walk onto the floor 
XYZ retail store and discover that you as the customer know more than the 
products being sold than the people working there.
