Re: uninstallation

For what it is worth, it seems that Justice is getting a pretty good
handle on the situation based on what they wrote in:

http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/cases3/micros/1329.htm

wherein the issues of redistributed DLLs are discussed.

Over the years my casual and mostly un-documented observations (what's
the use - it's rarely quite the same) on install matters have
demonstrated to me that some of these problems are known and are fixed
or in the works, some known and are not being fixed, some known and
there is no clue and others so random that they remain a mystery.

It looks like Mr. Lessig could get into an area of quality assurance
assessment before he is able to identify demons.

|All this technical discussion on un-installation is fascinating, but
begs
|the question. Why does the removal of applications need to be such a
|hassle? Why should installing applications create tangled masses of
|mysterious files the purpose of which can only be devined by experts?
|Lest it escape our attentions, this prime example Windows brain-dead
|design is providing Microsoft with no small amount of cover from the
|Justice allegations and Judge Jackson's order.
|
|Windows users may have grown (sadly) accustomed to such
|knuckle-headedness, but that can't excuse the fact that it is a totally
|unnecessary, if not deliberate, "feature" of Windows. If Larry Lessig
|intends to pose some tough questions for Microsoft's engineers, he
might
|start with this one.
