Voice vs. Data Traffic

Dear Senator Stevens:

Data traffic is growing over voice traffic, at a ratio of approximately
7:1. Simply put, in five to seven years, your telephone will travel in
packets over the Internet.

Any restrictions to this emerging technology will retard US innovation
and dominance in telecommunications.

An A/C power line has enough bandwidth to compete with existing
telephone lines.

The Regional Bell providers are beneficiaries of a natural monopoly that
retards the rapid growth of international communications through
switched packets.

Please reconsider any laws that erode this trend towards nearly free
bandwidth for everyone. You are already paying a premium for this lack
of competition.

Sincerely,

Charles Behney
