MSW thermolysis - Siemens AG inaugurates a 100,000 t/y integrated unit at Fürth , close to Nurenberg, Germany.

Dear environmentalists,

A French magazine, "Environnement & Technique", has published a 5-page
article (pp. 61-66) in its October '96 issue no. 160 about the inauguration
by the giant company Siemens AG of a 100,000 t/y integrated MSW thermolysis
unit at Fürth, close to Nurenberg, Germany.

The unit features two parallel line of 50,000 t/y. The slightly slanted
horizontal rotating thermolysis oven has a diameter of 2.8 m, is 22 m long
and weighs 110 metric tonne. Rotation speed is 2 to 4 RPM. The oven is
fitted inside with a battery of heating tubes acting also as waste mixers
due to the rotation. The unit got the name of PTR.

Unit is integrated in the sense that the carbon mass produced by the oven if
burned on the spot at high temperature to produce power.

PCDD/F concentration in flue gases is lower than 0.006 ng TEQ/Nm3. The
European directive no. 94/67 applicable to MSW incinerators mentions a limit
of 0.1 ng TEQ/Nm3, that is 16 times higher.

I am totally independent from Siemens. I consider that this technology is
very attractive and, by any means, highly preferable to incineration,
whatever be the flue gas depollution equipment a MSW incinerator can get,
like DENOX equipment and high efficiency bag filters, to obtain the same
level of results the PTR process gets.

If you want additional information, I suggest you get in touch with the
Siemens branch in your country.

Best regards, Manu
