Community Toxics Summit, 11/9 Contra Costa Cty

Hi -
Interesting meeting in Contra Costa County (In the San Francisco Calif Bay Area,
East of San Francisco) to empower the community in creating a toxic-free
community. Looks exciting. If you're local, you you might want to go and
invite others to come along, maybe even get some press for the event - or pass
the word along to others that might be interested. Looks like it has the
potential to do some good on this toxics issue!

COMMUNITY GROUPS CONVENE SUMMIT ON TOXIC ACCIDENT PREVENTION
                        AND CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY

 CONTACT: Denny Larson(415) 243-8373, ext. 212

In August and September of 1994, residents of Crockett, Rodeo, and
Tormey and employees at the Wickland Oil Terminal in Contra Costa County
were exposed to Catacarb, a toxic refinery-cleaning chemical that spewed
from the Unocal Refinery in Rodeo over a 16-day period. This chemical
release and a series of toxic accidents in recent years have prompted a
growing community movement that has greatly influenced industry behavior in
the northern east bay region.
On Saturday, November 9, citizens and community groups who have
pushed the issue of corporate responsibility in the wake of the Unocal
incident will meet to discuss ongoing implementation of a regionwide
toxic-free communities agenda. The Community Summit on Toxics and Chemical
Accidents will take place from 10 am to 4 pm at Plumbers Hall, Local 159,
1304 Roman Way in Martinez. The summit is free, and the public is
cordially invited to attend. For more information, call (415) 243-8373.
The day's events will include "Do-It-Yourself" air quality
management demonstrations, community organization exhibits, the viewing of
a recent video-documentary on chemical accidents in the region, and a panel
discussion with elected representatives. Sponsors include Shoreline
Environmental Alliance, Benicians Against Domes and Friends of Rose Drive,
Communities for a Better Environment, West County Toxics Coalition, Contra
Costa Building Trades Council, the Plumbers & Steamfitters Union, and
Communities for Safe Environments.

According to Randy Sawyer, Risk Management and Prevention Program
Specialist for the Contra Costa County Environmental Health Division,
community efforts have been critical in helping to shape industry actions
in recent years. "Over the past three or four years," says Sawyer, "the
results of community involvement with industry have resulted in changes to
how these companies work with their neighboring communities. Were it not
for community organizations, a lot of these changes--such as the Good
Neighbor Agreements with Unocal, Shell, and Tosco; the Pacific Refining
Agreements, which included the creation of a community technical advisor
for the town of Rodeo; the Crockett Cogeneration Facility negotiations; and
the recent Unocal Safety Audit--would probably not have occurred."
