Moderated Policy E-Mail Lists
Updated 8/26/96
=============================
PLEASE REPOST: The following is a first edition directory of
moderated policy e-mail lists and e-newsletters primarily run
by major national, state, and local public policy
organizations and activist groups.
For those who aren't sure what a "moderated" list is, it is a
list for which there is an editor, culling the wheat from the
chaff, or at the very least a list monitor who ensures that
all posts are on-topic. Another variation that I include is
the limited-access distribution list, where there is no
editor, but only a small and select group of people is given
automatic permission to post messages. In some cases that
could mean any subscriber to the list can post a message, but
only certain people are allowed to subscribe. In all cases
the idea is to provide a minimal level of quality control.
Unmoderated open lists, far more common, typically feature
ongoing discussions between list subscribers. All posts are
forwarded automatically to the list, regardless of content.
Large, general purpose unmoderated lists are often dominated
by messages of limited interest. Many smaller, more issue-
specific unmoderated lists, however, are quite interesting.
For a good list of (generally) unmoderated policy lists,
check out Stephanie's List at
http://www.NeoSoft.com/internet/paml/bysubj-politics.html.
You might also want to check out Todd Kuipers' E-Mail Zines
List at
http://www.merak.com/~tkuipers/elists/zines/search.htm,
though you should know ahead of time that some e-zines can be
a little on the strange/silly side.
For a good directory of policy/nonprofit web sites, check out
Web Active's site at
http://www.webactive.com/webactive/directory/directory.html
If you would like to add a moderated list to this directory
please see the directions at the end of this message. The
directory will be updated every month or two (basically when
I have time). Also, please let me know about any
inaccuracies or if any of the lists contained here have gone
dormant (I don't monitor them all).
Each of the listings contains information about how to
subscribe. For those moderated lists that allow subscribers
to post messages, information should be forwarded to you
about how to do so once you have subscribed.
