We have confirmed that the BFI Landfill in K$Q Co. is liscenced to accept and
hasbeen accepting medical waste, fly ash, processed paper pulp from Chesapeake
Industries in West Point, as well as municipal waste. A highly reactive stew.
RISE (Residents Involved in Saving the Environment) is less than one month away
from winning in the Circuit Court of appeals against Va. DEQ, and will require
all waste to be removed. We need to ensure it will be removed correctly and to
where is the big question! Cannot incinerate! This landfill was built in the
middle of the Dragon Run Swamp, which feeds into Piankatank -> York River ->
Chesapeake Bay. Dumping has been ongoing since 1991 or 92. Swamp is
contaminated, as are neighboring wells. Need help fast!!

Also, Chesapeake Industries in West Point is a HUGE polluter, with standing
fines imposed by Va. DEQ (and duly paid) to discharge effluent directly into the
York/Mattaponi Rivers at their confluence at West Point. Brown crap bubbles up
in the middle of the channel about 10:00 daily. Has been making bleached paper
since 1950's and discharging into river through West Point's sewage treatment
system since 1954 (at best a secondary system). Processed paper pulp is in
small closed landfills throughout both counties, as well as in operational BFI
Landfill. One of the closed landfills is slated to be under the watertable if
Cohoke Reservoir Project is completed. I am attaching Microsoft Word document
re: Cohoke Reservoir I created and am distributing through Alliance to Save the
Mattaponi, another group I am a member of. Please help/post to Internet/give
advice!!! I am a member of CCHW. Sincerely, Maureen Whited
