VICTORY IN PENSACOLA!!!!!!!
EPA REGION 4 ADMINISTRATOR ISSUES STATEMENT ANNOUNCING RELOCATION OF
PENSACOLA'S ESCAMBIA COMMUNITY
October 3, 1996
The following is a statement released today by US EPA Region 4
Administrator John H. Hankinson, Jr., regarding the Escambia relocation:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has decided to relocate all of
the residents living around the Escambia Treating Company Superfund site
in Pensacola, FL. This decision is based on the best scientific
information available about the community's unique environmental, health,
and safety factors. It is also based on the community's concerns, as
well as our goal to protect the neighborhood's health, welfare, and
well-being.
In coming weeks, we will be making specific arrangements to move
residents in the Rosewood Terrace, Oak Park, and Goulding subdivision
communities, and working with the US Dept. of Housing and Urban
Development to make similar arrangements for residents of the Escambia
Arms apartment complex. We will purchase their homes or move apartment
residents to alternate housing. After we are certain that all the
residents have moved out of the area, some or all of the current
structures will be demolished, the contaminated soils will be cleaned up,
and eventually the land will be available for industrial development,
providing jobs for the community.
