Dioxin from Hospital Incineration (fwd)
Dear listmembers
Here is someone new who needs some help. As he is not a member of the
list, it would be best if any responses to this plea were carbon copied to
his email address, as well as to the list.
TIA
Mitch Rice

Subject: Dioxin from Hospital Incineration
-- Mitch,
Nice to meet you. I am a member of a neighborhood group, United
Citizens And Neighbors (UCAN) based in Urbana, Illinois, that is
concerned about hospital incinerators in our community.
It is our understanding that hospital incinerators are one of the major
sources of dioxin emissions in the US because of the plastic that is
burned. Further, we've heard that hosptial incinerators are not
required to control or limit dioxin emissions because of a loophole that
allows incinerators that burn "on-site" waste to go unregulated. And
although the courts mandated thast the EPA introduce regulations to
close this loophole, proposed regs released in January 1995 were never
finalized because of Newt and Company.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
I'm writing to ask you if you are aware of people or groups that we
might turn to to find out more about this issue. We are looking for
some technical information that lay people can understand as well as
examples of organizing efforts in other communities facing similar
problems.
