Canadian pcbs heading for the States
September 20/96
URGENT! URGENT!
BORDER SCAM ABOUT TO BEGIN!
This week a Canadian cabinet committee approved the export of PCBs into the
United States for destruction - read incineration (ie. anything over 50
ppm).
A final decision will be made at the full cabinet session on Tuesday
September 24. Your letters and calls can help!
THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE IN HAZARDOUS WASTE!!!
While the Canadian government is expected to approve PCB exports, the
Sierra Legal Defense Fund in San Francisco has a November court date to
challenge the US EPA on the inadequacy of the current PCB rule. If the
Sierra Legal Defense Fund wins its case, the Canadian government will be in
an awkward position of having opened the door on this side, only to find
the US has shut the door. As well, Texas Representative Ken Bentzen is
actively working on several fronts to ban PCB imports.
The NY Times on September 12 cites a new study by Drs. Joseph and Sandra
Jacobson from Wayne State University, which concludes that "fetal brain
damage caused by environmental exposure to PCBs was comparable to the
damage found in children exposed to low levels of lead."
Communities living near US haz waste incinerators are at risk. People who
live along the transportation corridors to those sites are also potentially
at risk.
Technology exists to go to the source of the waste - technology that is not
incineration, is commerically available in both Canada and the US, and is
cost-competitive with Rawlins/WMI etc.

Questions?
I am a long-time environmentalist now working for EcoLogic, a hazardous
waste destruction technology company that is not incineration, is mobile
and has commercial contracts in Canada and Australia and is currently
negotiating contracts with the US DOE on chemical warfare agents. If you
want information sent directly, please send me a return e-mail.
Thanks, Joyce McLean
