PCBs

URGENT! URGENT!

To all activists concerned with transboundary shipments of hazardous waste:

The Canadian government appears poised to open the Canada/US border to
allow exports of PCBs into the US for incineration. This is the first
step in free trade in hazardous waste under NAFTA.

You can help!

American activists - please contact Meredith Grabois in Texas Rep.
Bentzen's office at 713/718 4100 and show support for Rep. Bentzen to issue
a press release deploring the proposed Canadian action. Rep. Bentzen has
already successfully had a bill passed through the US House of
Representatives demanding the border remain closed. PLEASE DO THIS BY
TUESDAY, SEPT. 17, as the Canadian Cabinet is likely to decide on this next
week. Any and all press from the States is very helpful. If you haven't
already seen it, the NY Times ran a story on PCBs in the September 12
edition.

Canadian activists - please contact Cathy Wilkinson in Environment Minister
Sergio Marchi's office at 819/997 1441, and Tony Genco in Art Eggleton's
office at 613/992 7332 to voice your concerns.

Press statements from environmental organizations are also encouraged.

Questions? Contact me at jimclean@inforamp.net. I am a long time
environmentalist, now working for a company called EcoLogic, a mobile,
non-incineration destruction technology which is in commercial operation in
Canada and Australia and is in the US Army approval process for chemical
warfare agents. I'm happy to send you material directly. Moving PCBs
around makes no sense when there is an alternative that can go to the
source.
