pvc, pvdc alternatives

does anyone on the dioxin list know of alternatives to poly vinyl cancer for
electrical wires that are currently manufactured and sold?  Some old houses
have non-PVC coated wires, but it's rare to find.  (PVC coated wire smells
REALLY bad and super toxic when a short circuit melts the coating.)

and what about the so-called green alternatives to polyvinyldene chloride
(PVDC -- an extra cl atom!) food wrap film (saran) that I've seen in some
health food stores that claims to be made exclusively from corn starch?
