chemimechanical pulping

To the list:

We are working with a contact at Lake Baikal in Irkutsk, Siberia who is 
fighting a paper mill that pollutes the lake (the largest freshwater lake 
in the world and the only habitat for a species of freshwater seal).  She 
mentioned the use of a process called "chemi-mechanical pulping."  Is 
anyone familiar with this and what it entails?  Thank you.
