Proposed Pet Crematory

On July 22nd 1996, the Columbus City Council approved a zoning
variance to allow a pet crematory to be built within 2 miles of the
former Columbus Waste to Energy trash incinerator. One of the reasons
for granting the zoning variance was the fact that within 2 miles of
the WTE facility there is an animal rendering facility, a sewage
sludge incinerator, a demolition landfill, and a tire shredding
facility. Columbus city council concluded that a pet crematory would
not effect property values, nor would it cause a nuisance due the to
   existence of these other facilities.

However, the people who live around these facilities have been dumped
on enough. On the night city council voted on the resolution,
neighbors of the proposed facility delivered over 3,000 protest
letters. This opposition was barely noticed by city council which
passed the resolution in a 7-0 vote!

Now residents are struggling to gather the required signatures to
place the issue on the 1997 ballot. They need your support urgently.
Please call Columbus city council (614) 645-7380. Tell our city
council that the burning of animals wrapped in plastic is a bad idea and
will cause a public health threat.
