Family Enviro Health Course;Enemy of the People
I am still in the process of putting together an undergrad courson the
family which will have a lot of material on enviro health issues.Iwould
very much like to show Ibsen's Enemy of the People. I understand that
there were two versions made. One a US version with Steve McQueen that got
very little exposure and another version set in India directed by the
great Indian film-maker Sajit Ray. Does anyone know how I could get either
version? My university film library has drawn a blank. The 9 vintage video
joints I consulted in Toronto have no ideas.
I have also heard that there was a made for TV docu-drama about Lois
Gibbs. Does anyone know hoe to get it? Was it any good?
Thanks to all who have helped with this course. Next year's version will
be solely about family and envir health issues
Part 1 Intro will use the film Lorenzo's Oil to show how parents become
science researchers and that investigating a variety of helath issues is
something students can do. Their first assignment will be to select any
common household cleaning/maintenance product and investigate it in terms
of health and safety concerns. (We will pay special attention to chlorine
which will teurn up later in the course.) We will discuss issues of social
reproduction and mutilnationals and students will read my research on this
and material from a vareity of sourses on household hazards.
Part11 Will expand on social reproduction and look at the issues of
dumping and exposure to pollutants. This is where I would like to show
Enemy of the people . We will see the 1981 film about Love Canal (and or
film about Lois Gibbs if suitable) and I am also viewin g some other films
this weekend on pollution in Niagara and read Brown and Mikkelson;s :No
Safe Place" and read some stuff I wrote on local resistance by housewives
to dumping. Part 111 will be about Biological Reproduction in Crisis and
students will read material fro Rachel's and other sources on endocrine
disruptors and endometriosis, male infertility, breast milk contamination
etc. We will see a video about pollution in the Gt Lakes, also Sex under
Siege and Hormone Copycats. I will likely use "Out Stolen Future"
next year when it will no doubt be out in paper. Part 1V of the
course will be about Poverty Illness and family coping
strategies--Victorian, Depression Era and current.
I will post the final version once it all comes together. Help on
audio-visual material would be much appreciated.
