GREENPEACE  TRIES  TO STOP GARBAGE INCINERATOR PLANT  BECAUSE  OF
DIOXIN EMISIONS

At 10.30 this morning two GP activist jumped into the garbage pit
of the incinerator plant of Montcada i Reixac (Barcelona), to try
to stop the burning of garbage and stop the emision of dioxins.
 
The two activists unfolded a banner inside the pit reading  "STOP
DIOXINS.  RECICLE NOW". Mweanwhile a group of  climbers  unfolded
another banner reading "CLOSED BECASUE OF DIOXINS".
 
Dioxins  are highlt toxic chlorinated substances produced  during 
the burning of wastes containing chlorine such as PVC wastes.
 
"Incineration  is the first source of dioxins in Cataluna.  While 
the  regional and municipal governments do nothing to  stop  this 
pollution, we have decided to take action and stop this source of 
dioxins", said Oliva Nunez from Greenpeace Spain.
 
This  protest  is  part of the campaign for a  "Free  of  dioxins 
mediterranean" that the MV Artic Sunrise started last wensday  in 
Barcelona,  and that will continue during the next 4  months  all 
around this sea. Greenpeace will point during this tour the  main 
sources  of dioxins, and prove that alternative exist and  demand 
to  the  Governments  programs  for  the  elimination  of  dioxin 
sources.
 
Greenpeace  demands  the  closure  of  all  the  incinerators  in 
Cataluna and the stop of the projects of new macroincinerators.
 
According to the Catalonian Government, this plant emits up to 19 
to  20 ngr of dioxins per cubic meter of air. This  concentration 
is between 190 and 200 times higher than the limit stablished  in 
other european countries (0.1 ngr/m3).
