non-combustion oriented volatization
dr. shadoff wrote "animals selectively retain the 2,3,7,8 isomers".
i have heard that these and other planar congeners pass through the gut
preferentially over more 3-D molecules. considering ~90% of our exposure
seems to come from the air emissions-to-food pathway, this is obviously a
critical factor, yet i have heard very little discussion. anyone have more
info on this issue?
also, dr. s. mentioned in a reply to me that in dioxin photolysis involving
-OH (eg in moist environment), the C-Cl bond is the weakest and
hydro/photolyzes first. this jibes w/ what chemists on sci.environment
have been telling me recently in a debate, but i have not yet heard a
reconciliation with the fact that in isolation, the C-Cl bond--and
C-halogen bonds generally--take the nost energy to break. this is
obviously critical to the whole call for phase-out of (almost all) the
chlorine industry. in english, what causes so dramatic a change from the
simple 'model' to the real world situation?
