Town bans installation of CPVC pip in homes.
* Lake in the Hills: The Village Board has banned the use of CPVC pipe, a type
of plastic, in the construction of new homes. The action doesn't affect houses
that have b een built or are currently under construction.
Two developers, Sundance Homes and Town and Country Homes, have used CPVC pipe
in the North Star phase two, Bellchase and Provence subdivisions, said Lake in
the Hills Building Commissioner David Sellek. The board's decision was made at
Sellek's recommendation and over the compaints by BF Goodrich representative
Mike Lipke. CPVC pipe has been on the market for 37 years and is an improved
version of PVC pipe, according to Lipke. Questions have been raised about the
pipe's durability, compatibility with other plumbing parts and potential
hazards, village officials said. CPVC conduits are not as hardy as metal pipe,
according to some critics. -- sheridan Chaney.
