OPPT NEWSBREAK Weekend Update 20-21 April 1996
Today's "Toxic News for the 'Net" brought to you by the OPPT Library

"Chemical Truck Overturns, Forces Evacuation." Washington Post, 21
April, B5.
A tank truck carrying 3,500 gallons of a mixture of water
and sulfuric acid overturned on an I-695 exit ramp in Anne
Arundel County, Md., Saturday, pinning the driver in the cab
and forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,000 residents of two
nearby housing developments. Approximately 20 gallons of
the liquid leaked from an overflow tube on the top of the
tanker and workers from the Maryland departments of the
environment and transportation were able to stop the leak
quickly. The toxic liquid is used to harden steel and was
being hauled to the Blue Plains sewage treatment plant in
               Washington, D.C.
