pvc piping phsase out

Dear dioxin list subscriber: boy, we need your help and fast. On Monday,
March 25, the City Services Committee and the Board of Health in Toronto,
Ontario are holding a joint public meeting to consider the Board of
Health's suggestion that the City of Toronto PHASE-OUT ITS PURCHASE OF
PVC PIPING FOR USE IN CITY WATER AND SEWAGE LINES.

As you can imagine, the move, (the first? of its kind in North America)
is facing severe opposition from the Vinyl lobby and its cronies on
Council. This will be voted on by City Council on April 1st, but we need
to show overwhelming support on the 25th.

Here's what we need -- letters, e-mail messages, telegrams, bouquets,
candy thingys, sent to me here at tea that I can pass on to the public
meeting, affirming that the Board of Health is exactly on the right track
here. For your convenience, I've enclosed a couple of paragraphs you
might consider using in your letter but edit to your hear'ts content.
Thanks in advance for your support.

Dear City of Toronto Councillors:

I have been informed that you will soon consider a motion to phase-out
the purchase of pvc piping for use in the City of Toronto's water and
sewage lines. I want to congratulate you on this important
environmental and public health initiative.

As you know, activists and local governments around the world are
recognizing the serious health effects associated with the production of
pvc. It already accounts for about 30 per cent of chlorine use. Many
local governments in Europe have already taken steps to phase out
pvc, and some federal governments, like Sweden and Denmark, are
considering national legislation to ban pvc.

Local governments in North America need to consider similar action, and
that's why we will carefully monitor your success in Toronto. I urge you
to support the Board of Health and its timely recommendation that the
City phase-out pvc piping.

Thank you for your attention to this serious environmental and public
health issue. I look foward to hearing from you in response to this letter.

Sincerely,

Your name
