dioxin-free tampons/ Playtex campaign
Hi everyone!
The Playtex campaign is going strong!! Here's a quick update.
New people are signing on every few days and there is still plenty of
time to get involved, so contact me if you are interested.
We are boycotting Playtex because their tampons have trace levels
of dioxin in them and we want them to phase out chlorine by the year
2000. All major brand tampons contain dioxin. We have chosen Playtex
because they are a smaller company which will be easier to affect than
the others, and once they switch the others will have to as well to stay
competitive. The boycott is also a buycott to pressure local retailers
to stock their shelves with brands of safer tampons.
The boycott petition and information about the campaign has gone
out in various national publications such as SEAC's Threshold, the Free
The Planet updates, and the Connecticut College alumni magazine.
Together, these reach over 35,000 people. Over 20 schools nation-wide
are involved, as are numerous individuals around the country. As soon as
we get a web site set up, the petition will be going out to all women who
are part of the D.C. feminist fax net. Lastly, we are currently working on
press releases to women's magazines and a letter to go out to newspaper
editors, so if you are interested in getting this letter as a sample to
send to your local papers, e-mail me and I will forward it to you as soon
as it is ready.
Please contact me to get a boycott petition and more
information. We are looking for people in DE to organize the rally in
May outside the Playtex headquarters as well. Contact me to get
involved in any way. Thanks a lot!!
Take care and many thanks to the people around the
country already involved!!
Sincerely,
Brigitte O'Donoghue
