GRASS-ROOTS CONFERENCE--CANCER AND CHEMICALS, THE ENVIRONMENTAL LINK:
CITIZENS TAKING ACTION FOR PREVENTION--TO TAKE PLACE IN INDIANAPOLIS ON
NOVEMBER 4
Sponsored by the Citizens Action Coalition of Indiana and co-sponsored by
over 15 other organizations from the local to national level, Cancer and
Chemicals, the Environmental Link: Citizens Taking Action for Prevention,
will take place at the Adams Mark
Hotel, 2544 Executive Drive, Indianapolis, on Saturday, November 4, 1995,
from 10:00 am to 4:15 pm.
Though cancer detection dominates discussions about cancer today, a growing
citizens movement is changing the focus to primary prevention-stopping
chemical and radioactive carcinogens at the source. Cancer and Chemicals
will help provide citizens with an understanding of the environmental
connections to cancer and with the tools they need to organize for change.
The keynote speech of the conference is "Risk Assessment, Citizens,
Science and Democracy," to be presented by Paul Connett, professor of
chemistry, St. Lawrence University. Dr. Connett is a leader of the
grass-roots movement for environmental justice. He has been researching waste
management and dioxin for 10 years and has made over 1,000 presentations
on those subjects in 26 countries. An afternoon plenary panel of three
prominent environmental and health activist-organizers will explore the
issue of politics and pollution.
Conference workshops will cover critical issues in cancer activism:
breast cancer and the environment, fighting corporate junk science,
sick building syndrome, growing safe food, grass-roots organizing in Indiana,
reducing individual exposure to carcinogens, pollution prevention = good
business sense, and countering environmental racism.
The registration fee for the conference is $25 by October 21 and $35 after.
Scholarships are available. The registration fee includes lunch
(vegetarian available).
Accessible by public transportation and to people with physical disabilities,
the Adams Mark Hotel is near the Indianapolis Airport on the southwest side
of the city, just off I-465. Those wishing to make room reservations can
call the hotel at 1-800-444-2326 or 317-248-2481.
The Citizens Action Coalition, 317-921-1120, and the above contact person
