SAB Executive Committee Meeting Summary
On September 21, the EPA's Science Advisory Board Executive
Committee held a meeting to discuss several items, including the fate of
the Dioxin Reassessment Report. Public comments were made on the issue
by Stephen Lester of CCHW, Rick Hind from Greenpeace, Stan and Sherri 0,
Loscko from Grove City, OH (great anti-incinerator activists), Peter +
deFur from the Environmental Defense Fund, and Ret. Admiral E.R.
Zumwalt. Also speaking at the meeting were Allen Polland and Tom Starr
from ENVIRON (Forest and Paper Association), Gary Karajanian (Mr. "Dioxin
Prevents Cancer"), and several others from the audience. After a brief
discussion, the Executive Committee voted to send the Reassessment and
the Review Committee Report to the Administrator, with minor changes, by
October 1.
What does this mean?? The good news is that the Reassessment document
was approved by the SAB and the EPA can move forward in finalizing the
report. The bad news is that the SAB made criticisms that the EPA will
likely listen to in preparing the final report. This includes the
criticism that there is a "tendency to overstate the possiblity of
danger" regarding dioxin. This language remains in the report. The EPA
is progecting a final document by September 1996.
