GREENPEACE PROTEST LABELS "DOW BRAND" DIOXIN
AT BINATIONAL MEETING IN WINDSOR
Windsor, ONT (GP) - Greenpeace will lead a binational group of
environmental activists tonight in an evening protest against the
Dow Chemical company and major corporate polluters of the Great
Lakes. The event coincides with the meeting of the U.S. and
Canadian
governments in Windsor, Ont. to discuss their binational strategy
to eliminate persistent toxic substances like dioxin.
The protest will take place at the Eclectic Cafe, 157 University
Avenue on Tuesday night at 9:00, just a few blocks from the
governments' meeting at the Windsor Hilton.
A giant outdoor slide projector will display graphic images of
dramatic actions Greenpeace has taken to stop major corporate
polluters like Dow Chemical. The images illustrate the theme of a
draft Greenpeace briefing paper, "Dow Makes You Poison Great
Things,"
circulated at the governments' meeting today.
"Dioxin is a corporate product whose number one brand name is
Dow,"
said Greenpeace Chlorine campaigner Charlie Cray. "The reason the
governments have done virtually nothing about dioxin is that
companies
like Dow have run a deliberate campaign to obscure the sources
the
dioxin, deny its toxicity and delay meaningful action to
eliminate it."
According to Greenpeace Chlorine campaigner Jack Weinberg, "The
two governments have been powerless in standing up to the chemical
industry. We believe that meaningful action for the elimination
of dioxin is now the responsibility of companies like Dow whose
chlorine based products are responsible for more dioxin pollution than any
other source. We must confront Dow as a means to get to the root
of the problem."
Draft copies of "Dow Makes You Poison Great Things," can be
obtained
from by calling Rick Hind at (202) 319-2505. Ruth Stringer, a
Greenpeacer attending the Dioxin conference at the Edmonton-
Renaissance Hotel, can respond to Dow's PVC report released
today.
The Greenpeace report will be formally released in Midland, Michigan
on September 15 and 16th, when Greenpeace, scientists and others
will make the case for a chlorine phase-out near Dow's corporate
headquarters in the center of the Great Lakes.
