Re: Dioxin, etc. disposal methods

There is an old industrial waste dump near Amsterdam (called
Diemerzeedijk), which is partly polluted with dioxin. The dump has not been
used for a long time, and now it is a rather beautiful wild nature area.
Looks a bit like a savanna, with spreaded bushes and tall herbs (like
Dipsacus). Also many rabbits and even top-of-the-pyramid animals like
weasels, a fox and a bird of prey.

Now there are plans to use this area for housing. There were several
proposals for dealing with the dioxin, like biological breakdown by
inroducing a sort of bacteria farm (did not work in another test site) and
heating the soil with large electrodes, which would capture the poison in a
sort of glazing process (too expensive). What they want to do now, is just
cover it up with a plastic foil, and put a 2 meter thick layer of clean soil
on it. This however would not allow for houses to be built on it, and the
area would become a recreation area. Which it allready is ! Beautiful !
