Dioxin, etc. disposal methods
Are there any recommended recognized safe methods of disposing of dioxin,
pcb's, DDT, trace metals and/or PAH's into a landfill?
The reason I'm asking is because the Port Authority of NY & NJ is planning to
dredge the Howland Hook Marine Terminal in Staten Island, NY and it has been
reported that the sediment is too contaminated with some of the above
mentioned items for ocean disposal.
As a result, an alternative of disposing of the reportedly contaminated
sediment at Waste Management's New Milford, CT landfill has been proposed.
Obviously, the residents of New Milford are not thrilled with the idea of
receiving New York's contaminated sediment which they fought from being
dumped in their area, even though they benefit from the dredging.
So as a result, some residents of New Milford have formed a group called SOS
(Stop Ocean Sludge) and allied with other grassroot groups and the town
council to challenge the disposal of the controversial sediment at the local
Waste Management landfill.
So far they have raised about 5,300 signatures on a petition to oppose the
disposal in New Milford and requests the CT DEP to have a public hearing on
any application by Waste Management to accept this sediment. Waste
Management has submitted their application and SOS has submitted the
petitions to the CT DEP, however, we are not sure that the DEP will have a
public hearing as requested.
If we are to pursue the issue, it would be helpful to know the recommended
disposal methods of the above contaminants and how the residents of New
Milford can protect their themselves.
Any comments or recommendations would be appreciated.

Paul Marr
