Today's (5/4) Washington Post has a quarter-page ad on the Federal Page from
"the alliance for reasonable regulation," a brand new industry front group
lobbying to abolish environmental regulations that are "dumb," they claim.
The ad performs a great public service, esp. for citizens who live beyond the
Beltway. It provides a TOLL-FREE number for calling congress to lobby against
environmental laws. However, anyone can call and state anything that they
want!
the number is 1-800-444-1555
it will ask a series of questions about you, your address, zip and phone
number. Unfortunately, it will only permit you to contact the Senators listed
for your state (using data from the zip and phone numbers that you must enter
for the automated system to work.) You can bypass leaving the address, or
perhaps you could leave an address stating "Love Canal, New York" or some
similar locale. You could try leaving a different address / phone number if
you wanted to contact another state's Senators.
I tried the number and it DOES work. However, the line probably won't be up for
very long, since it's dedicated solely to promoting Sen. Dole's (R-industry)
bill S. 343, and likely will be turned off once it's rammed through the Senate.
sponsored by your "friends" at the Alliance for Reasonable Regulation, working
to increase corporation's freedoms to poison everyone. Some of its members
include the Chemical Manufacturers Association, the National Association of
Manufacturers and the Grocery Manufacturers Association. their address: 1331
Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Suite 1500, Washington, DC 20004, 202-637-3094
have fun!
